The P Word
Pet is a term that denotes ownership and subjugation.
You’d probably expect Animal Internet to rally against websites that promote this old-fashioned paradigm of ownership. We believe, however, that the more evolved approach is to offer our paws, talons and flippers in friendship.
Call me an apologist for humans but most don’t realize the word is impolite.
I’ll grant you that some humans do see us as inferior - mere pawns to their King - but most “pet people” are pretty nice - they supply us with food and shelter, they share their backyards with us and pay the vet. Thinking they “own” us, although not politically correct, doesn’t necessarily mean we should shun them. And let’s be real, no amount of yelling is going to get them to suddenly change this mind. Things like that take time.
Alexander Graham Bell hated arson. He knew he couldn’t wave his hand and suddenly convince arsonists to stop lighting fires. Instead he created a way for people to call the Fire Department.
Like Mr. Bell, Animal Internet feels the best thing we can do here is create a dialogue.
* We made up that part about Mr. Bell hating arson to help make our point.
