Don Imus’ Parrot Apologizes
Mr. Imus said the racist and sexist comments first but that didn’t make it right for me to repeat them over and over. To everyone whose feelings I too have hurt, I am sorry.
For years I have hid behind the defense that these were Mr. Imus’ comments, not mine. I was merely the messenger; repeating again and again to anyone within earshot of my cage what Mr. Imus had already said. After meeting with the Rutgers University Women"s Basketball Team, however, I have come to realize that repeating things I know to be hurtful is as bad as saying them myself. Words have power. Edward Bulwer-Lytton was right when he said the pen is mightier than the sword. (Although I’ve never heard of anyone committing suicide by reading.)
As long as I’m issuing apologies, I’d also like to express my regrets to Polly and her fiance. Cracker is not a nice word and should have never been used in that context.
Finally, I also ask forgiveness from anyone who might have mistaken my whistles and “pretty boy” comments for sexual harassment.
