The domestic dog is almost certainly derived from the gray wolf according to the Illinois State Museum’s web site detailing the Pleistocene Animals of the Midwestern U.S. (follow the “dire wolf” link.)

Dogs, wolves, coyotes, foxes----- it’s all the same to me. Except for Reba (my next-door neighbor dog), when I see one coming, I dive for cover. They’re all mean, mean.
